Genesis

1Okay so first there’s nothing, like actually nothing, and God’s just there and he makes the heaven and the earth, that’s it, that’s the opening move, unreal. 2And it’s all void and dark and wet and God’s spirit is just hovering over the water like a duck that hasn’t figured out where to land yet. 3So God says “let there be light” and there’s light, that’s the whole spell, four words, I need whatever he’s on. 4He looks at the light, decides it’s good, and splits it from the dark, which means up until this exact second light and dark were just mixed together in one pile, think about that. 5Names the light Day, names the dark Night, evening and morning, day one, we’re keeping score now. 6Day two he makes a firmament, which is like a ceiling for water, there’s water above the sky and water below the sky, I don’t make the rules. 7He physically builds the thing and it holds, waters up top, waters down here, done. 8Names it Heaven. Evening, morning, day two. 9Day three, he tells all the water under the sky to bunch up in one spot so dry land can show its face. 10Land’s called Earth, the water pile is called Seas, and God’s already saying “good” again, he’s very pleased with himself and honestly fair. 11Then grass, then plants that make their own seeds, then fruit trees that make fruit with the seed built right in, he’s speedrunning agriculture. 12And it happens exactly like that, grass, seed herbs, fruit trees, all doing their own thing, and it’s good, he said it, I believe him. 13Evening, morning, day three, we are absolutely flying through this. 14Day four, lights in the sky now, to split day from night and to mark seasons and days and years, so basically God invents the calendar. 15Also so there’s light down here, that’s the actual point of them, glad we got there. 16Two big lights, one to boss the day, one to boss the night, and stars too, just tossed off at the end like an afterthought, “he made the stars also,” casual. 17Sets them in the sky to shine on the earth. 18To rule day and night and split the light from dark, again, and it’s good, again. 19Evening, morning, day four. 20Day five, water’s told to swarm with living creatures and birds are told to fly around up in the sky. 21Big whales, everything that moves in the water, every kind of bird, all good. 22God blesses them, tells them to be fruitful and multiply and fill the water, and the birds to multiply on land, we love a directive. 23Evening, morning, day five. 24Day six, land animals now, cattle and creepy crawly things and wild beasts, and it happens. 25Made exactly as described, beasts, cattle, everything that creeps, and it’s good, he’s four for four today. 26And then, big one, “let us make man in our image,” who’s us, who’s he talking to, we’re not gonna get an answer, man’s gonna have dominion over the fish and birds and cattle and everything, huge promotion. 27So he makes man in his own image, male and female both, right there in one verse, created together. 28Blesses them, be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, subdue it, have dominion over everything that moves, humanity’s whole job description in one breath. 29Gives them every seed plant and every fruit tree for food, this is the good version, nobody’s eating meat yet, hold that thought. 30And every animal gets the green plants too, everybody’s a vegetarian on day six, incredible timeline. 31God looks at everything he made, not just good this time, “very good,” and evening and morning, day six, and I’m not crying you’re crying.

1So heaven and earth are finished, the whole crew of them, everything that’s in them, done and done. 2Seventh day, God’s finished his work, and he rests, on the day HE MADE, he didn’t have to build the resting, he just stopped, love that for him. 3He blesses the seventh day, makes it holy, because that’s the day he rested from everything he made, that’s the whole origin of the weekend, you’re welcome. 4Now we get generations of heaven and earth in the day God made them, and here’s the thing, this is basically a whole second telling starting over, I see you, editors. 5Before there’s rain, before there’s a guy to work the ground, no plants, no herbs, nothing’s grown yet, he’s setting the scene again. 6Instead a mist just comes up out of the ground and waters everything, no rain needed apparently, weird flex but okay. 7And THEN, he forms a guy out of dust, actual dirt, and breathes into his nose, and now the guy’s alive, that’s Adam, that’s the origin, dust and breath. 8Plants him a garden east in a place called Eden, drops the man right in it. 9Grows every tree that looks good and tastes good, plus two special ones in the middle, tree of life and tree of knowledge of good and evil, we all know where this is going. 10A river comes out of Eden and waters the garden and then splits into four heads, we’re getting geography now. 11First one’s Pison, goes around the whole land of Havilah, where there’s gold. 12And that gold is good gold, plus bdellium and onyx stone, he’s doing a whole travel brochure. 13Second river’s Gihon, goes around Ethiopia. 14Third one’s Hiddekel, that’s toward Assyria, and the fourth is the Euphrates, okay four rivers, noted, moving on. 15God takes the man and puts him in the garden to work it and keep it, so Adam’s got a job on day one of his life. 16God tells him, every tree in the garden, eat whatever you want, freely, he’s very generous about this. 17Except one, the tree of knowledge of good and evil, don’t eat that one, the day you eat it you’re dying, that day, he’s very clear. 18Then God says it’s not good for the man to be alone, gonna make him a helper, a “help meet,” love that phrase, we still don’t have a wife yet though. 19So God forms every animal and bird out of the ground and brings them to Adam to see what he’ll name them, and whatever Adam calls a thing, that’s its name, forever, no committee, no notes. 20Adam names all the cattle and birds and beasts, but for Adam himself there’s still no helper found among them, imagine going through the entire animal kingdom on a first date and coming up empty. 21So God knocks him out, deep sleep, and takes a rib, closes the flesh back up, surgery with no anesthesiologist except God himself. 22Builds the rib into a woman and brings her to the man, that’s the whole build process, one rib, one woman. 23And Adam’s first words are “bone of my bones, flesh of my flesh, she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man,” he’s thrilled, he’s workshopping puns immediately. 24Therefore a man leaves his mother and father and cleaves to his wife and they’re one flesh, there’s the thesis statement for marriage, right there in Eden. 25And they’re both naked, man and wife, and not ashamed, last calm sentence of the whole book, enjoy it while it lasts.

1Now the serpent’s the most subtle animal God made, and he goes right up to the woman, “did God really say you can’t eat from any tree in the garden,” starting with a lie about what God said, incredible opening move. 2And she says no no, we can eat from the trees, that’s fine. 3Just not the one in the middle, God said don’t eat it, don’t even touch it, or you’ll die, she’s already adding rules, “don’t even touch it” isn’t even in the original ask. 4Snake goes “you’re not gonna die.” 5Says God knows the second you eat it your eyes open and you’ll be like gods, knowing good and evil, so now it’s not a trap, it’s a gift God’s hoarding, incredible sales pitch. 6And she looks at it, it’s good for food, it’s pretty, it’ll make her wise, so she takes it, eats it, and hands it to her husband, who is standing RIGHT THERE, and he eats it too. 7Eyes open, both of them, first thing they notice, they’re naked, so they sew fig leaves together and make aprons, humanity’s first outfit is a panic outfit. 8Then they hear God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, casual evening stroll, and Adam and his wife hide in the trees. 9God calls out “where are you,” which he obviously knows, he’s setting up the conversation. 10Adam says he heard him and got scared because he was naked, so he hid, this is a very honest answer that gives away the whole thing. 11God goes “who told you you were naked, did you eat from the tree I told you not to,” zero patience for the runaround. 12And here it is, here’s the line, Adam says “the woman YOU gave me, she gave me the fruit, and I ate it,” he blames his wife and God in the same sentence, one breath, both of them, not even himself, incredible. 13God turns to the woman, “what did you do,” and she says the serpent tricked her, so she did it, everybody’s got someone to point at except the snake. 14So the snake gets cursed above every animal, crawl on your belly, eat dust, all your life, worst review in the whole book. 15God puts hatred between the snake and the woman, between his kids and her kids, her kid’s gonna crush his head, he’s gonna bite the heel, first prophecy of the whole thing and it’s aimed at a snake. 16Woman gets pain in childbirth multiplied way up, and her husband’s gonna rule over her, this is the sentence, not a suggestion. 17Adam gets it worse in a way, ground’s cursed because of him, he’s eating from it in pain his whole life. 18Thorns and thistles now, and he’s eating the actual field plants, not the good garden stuff anymore. 19Sweat of his face for his bread till he’s back in the ground, dust to dust, that’s the whole deal now. 20Adam names his wife Eve, mother of all the living, first time he names her instead of just calling her Woman. 21God makes them actual clothes out of skins, upgrades them from the fig leaf situation himself, still looking out for them a little. 22Then God says “the man’s become like one of us, knowing good and evil,” and now he’s worried about the tree of life, can’t let him live forever like this. 23So he’s sent out of the garden, to work the ground he came from, exile, effective immediately. 24Drives him out, puts cherubims and a flaming sword at the east side, spinning every way, guarding the tree of life, door’s locked for good.
